As soon as the US industry agreed to pool its resources to come up with a single digital High Definition Television standard, the Japanese analog standard looked doomed, and so it has proved. On Friday, an advisory committee to the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications recommended that the government scrap its plan to broadcast analog high-definition signals from a satellite due to be launched early next century, and suggested using the satellite to broadcast a digital signal instead, marking the beginning of the end for analog.
