US DISTRIBUTION DEAL FOR CAMBRIDGE COMPUTER’s Z88

By CBR Staff Writer

The super-lightweight Z88 laptop from Sir Clive Sinclair’s Cambridge Computer Ltd is to be marketed in the US by Diversified Foods Inc of Portland, Oregon, which looks to do 100,000 this year and 200,000 to 300,000 in 1989. The size of an A4 pad, the Z80-based box will be sold in the US for $550, and should find a significant market there since it has won unstinted praise from one or two of the most widely-read commentators in the US. The machine can dump files to MS-DOS micros and is manufactured for Cambridge by the UK end of SCI Systems in Scotland. On the basis of figures from Romtec, Cambridge believes the Z88 to be the top selling laptop here, and Italian and French versions are due to be launched in a few weeks.
