US COMPANIES WORK ON RIVAL ROPRIETAY SYSTEMS

While Europe has agreed on a standard for digital cellular telephone systems, the US is not so lucky, and a string of companies led by AT&T Co’s Bell Laboratories, Motorola Inc, L M Ericsson Telefon AB, Northern Telecom Ltd and International Mobile Machines Corp are working on rival proprietary systems that will vie for attention from mobile telephone service operators who are running out of capacity on more extravagant analogue systems.
