US COMMERCE DEPARTMENT TO RELAX RESTRICTIONS ON EXPORT TO EASTERN BLOC

By CBR Staff Writer

The US Commerce Department has taken on board the argument that 16-bit micros are now freely available to the Comecon countries from places like Taiwan and Singapore, and bowed to pressure from US manufacturers to look at relaxing the US restrictions on export of low-end 16-bit micros – as well as optical disks, photocopiers and CAD software: the mood is towards allowing companies a general export licence to the Eastern Bloc rather than having to create a mountain of paperwork for each sale, and whatever is decided is likely to become policy for the CoCom Free World technology exports watchdog organisation that is based in Paris.
