US teenagers prefer Twitter over Facebook

Plan to incorporate ads on Instagram could be 'a catalyst' for Facebook

By CBR Staff Writer

Twitter is well accepted as the most preferred social networking site over Facebook by teenagers in the US.

The survey from financial firm Piper Jaffray reveals that 26% of teens preferred Twitter, while the popularity of Facebook is waning among teens with only 23% citing it as the most important.

The latest report also illustrates a transformation in preferences compared to earlier survey, which was topped by Facebook with 33% over Twitter by 30%.

Piper Jaffray, managing director and senior research analyst, Gene Munster and research analyst, Douglas Clinton said in a joint statement that the data point is likely unsurprising as the trend in the latest survey has been moving toward Twitter over the past couple of years.

"Overall, regardless of the trend in teen preference toward other networks, we continue to believe that Facebook has additional avenues for monetisation in Instagram and video in the coming months," both said.

Of the overall, about 4% of teens had voted for Tumblr as their favourite network, similar to teh earlier survey, while about 3% favoured Google+, a 5% drop.

The report also noted that a plan to incorporate ads on Facebook’s latest acquisition Instagram would tend to be ‘a catalyst’ for Facebook.
