Hunter Moore, the founder of a ‘revenge porn’ website, has been ordered to pay $250,000 in damages for defamation by a US district court in Nevada.
Moore, who was found to be making false claims about James McGibney, the chief executive of an anti-bullying website Bullyville.com, was ordered to pay the sum to the executive.
In addition, the judge has also ordered Moore to pay $11,581 in attorneys’ fees and $1,588.50 in other costs related with the case.
Moore had alleged McGibney was a paedophile who was in possession of child pornography.
Moore, who sold his website IsAnyoneUp.com to McGibney, started taunting the anti-bullying advocate through Twitter.
McGibney’s lawyer Marc Randazza was cited by Ars Technica as saying in this case, Hunter Moore falsely accused McGibney of possessing child pornography and engaging in child abuse.
"As you can see in the judgment, this was not just a situation where the plaintiff was merely upset by the defendant’s words," Randazza said: "We were required to put on evidence of damages, which we did.
"The court agreed that we proved up $250,000 in damages, which is everything we asked for on the client’s behalf."
McGibney has said he will dontate the money to women’s shelters.
