Unwired Australia nabs $28m from Intel for WiMAX

Down Under wireless broadband carrier Unwired Australia said yesterday that Intel Corp's venture capital arm would invest about $27.9m to boost Unwired's WiMAX network deployment efforts.

By CBR Staff Writer

Unwired plans to spend the money to expand its broadband services in major Australian cities beyond Sydney, where the company is based.

Intel and Unwired also would jointly promote WiMAX networks in the country. Unwired said it would adopt future Intel products that support the upcoming IEEE 802.16e standard for WiMAX in infrastructure equipment and notebooks.

Twelve months ago wireless broadband was on the horizon, but today it’s an accepted and trusted option for thousands of customers as evidenced by the rapid growth of customers for our Sydney business, said Unwired chief executive David Spence, in a statement.

Intel Capital’s investment will enable us to make wireless broadband available to a greater number of Australians and to quickly move to WiMAX in other cities as equipment becomes available.
