Boeing Co’s new 777, which last month flew around the world on its maiden celebratory tour, and set a new speed record for commercial flight between Bangkok and Seattle – 7,850 miles non-stop in 13.36 hours – is using UnixWare and NetWare software from Novell Inc: but don’t panic: they are being used by General Electric Co Plc’s GEC-Marconi to connect seat-back screens to an on-board server handling in-flight shopping, and are nothing to do with flight control; details of goods ordered any time up to 20 minutes before landing will be sent down to a point-of-sale terminal at the destination gate and the goods will be ready and waiting for you.
