X/Open Co Ltd., Unix International Inc and the Open Software Foundation duly came together in New York yesterday to confirm plans for a unified Unix system specification for application programming interfaces. The new specification will be a superset of the X/Open Portability Guide, enhanced by the merger of application interfaces from the System V Interface Definition Edition 3 – basis of System V.4, the Open Software Foundation’s Application Environment Specification and other interfaces commonly used by the most popular Unix applications. Some 50 companies have indicated their support for the armistice document that is intended to mark the end of the Unix Wars.
