The Open Group is going to announce the second version of its single Unix specification as Unix 98 in March, expecting branded products in the time-frame its name suggests. Unix 98, which the Open Group had hoped to define by year-end, will include the 64- bit application programming interface extensions established by the Aspen group of companies earlier this year CI No 2,862) to support 64-bit architectures, plus whatever additional programming interfaces it has by then. The Open Group looks set to be busy in March, as it’s also planning to reveal its progress to date on security at that time, while the SQL Access Group it swallowed two years ago (CI No 2,560) is also set to reveal the fruits of its work so far, although it’s unclear if this will include its promised stored procedures specification.
