Universal offering movie downloads in UK

Universal Studios is launching the UK's first download-to-own movie service.

By CBR Staff Writer

The service will allow users to download films directly to their computer, revolutionizing the way films are distributed.

Current laws mean that films can only be downloaded for a short rental period, however under the new system movie lovers will pay GBP19.99 and receive two download copies and a DVD through the post.

Unlike with MP3s, the user will not be able to burn the download onto DVD themselves, nor will they be able to play it on any non-MWP compatible software, effectively ruling out watching the films on iPods or PSPs.

The service is Universal’s aggressive response to rising internet piracy and it is hoped it will have the same impact on the industry that Apple’s iTunes did when it was first launched.

Among the first films available for download will be King Kong and Pride and Prejudice, though it is assumed the studio will eventually make its entire library available.
