Unisys Ltd has won a UKP1.1m contract from the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys in England and Wales, and the General Register Office in Scotland: data collected from 24m households across the UK is to be handled by networked clusters of BTOS workstations; a pilot network of 80 workstations is being set up at the Office of Population’s headquarters at Titchfield, Hampshire, and a smaller installation of 10 workstations for development work will be in Edinburgh at the General Register’s Office; the main data processing centre is at Hillington, Glasgow, where 450 workstations are being installed; Unisys says that the system will be ready to start processing census returns in June 1991, and the processing will take over 18 months.
