Unisys Corp yesterday announced the first two models in its new range of self-service SuperGen CTOS workstations – the high-end SuperGen Series 5000 33MHz 80486-based modular server, which supports up to 32 workstations, and the entry-level Series 2000 20MHz 80386SX-based diskless workstation. The SuperGen 5000 also contains speech circuitry to support emerging multi-media applications. Most system components are self-configuring plug-in cartridges, slide-in drives, or slide-on expansion units, encased in copper-nickel-coated plastic – upgradable by even the novice. The new workstations support the new MS-DOS Protected Mode Interface standard for the next generation of MS-DOS applications – multiple MS-DOS sessions can be run concurrently with CTOS, Windows 3.0 and Posix applications. Unisys also announced that the new release of its CTOS operating system will provide non-OS/2 support for Presentation Manager. The SuperGen 5000 will be out in in August; the Super-Gen 2000 next month in the US, and in August in the UK. The Series 5000 has 4Mb RAM, SuperVGA with 1024 by 768 resolution, 1.44Mb flexible disk, 100Mb 3.5 removable hard disk, three RS232 ports, one parallel port, a SCSI adaptor, and one cluster port. The Series 2000, which costs $3,000, has 2Mb RAM, SuperVGA, two RS232 ports, one parallel port and one cluster port. The enhanced CTOS III operating system ships in fourth quarter.
