Unisys Corp has enhanced both its flagship mainframe lines – the Sperry 2200s and Burroughs A-series. Only just over a year after the launch of the 2200-600 top-end OS 1100 machines, it has come out with a 2200-600 Evolutionary System claimed to offer 15% more performance but to require only 40% the power and cooling. It is from $2.3m for a uniprocessor to $8.8m for a four-processor model. Unisys also lowered the entry point to the 2200 series with a Model 100 below the 200, anticipating the IBM 4391 and selling for from $115,000 to $200,000. Both are out now in the US. In the A Series, a new A16, initially coming in five models, replaces some models of the A12, and costs from $1.75m for a basic uniprocessor to $5.9m for a fully configured dual processor. There are also four new A12 models replacing the A9 and A10: at the top they are more than twice as powerful as the A10 and cost less than double. The new A Series machines are also available immediately in US.
