With 22,000 employees, the DPW is the largest Commonwealth agency to have its computer systems consolidated and managed by Unisys under the seven-year, $565M information technology outsourcing agreement, currently in its third year. The mainframe computer upgrade and additional services will be transitioned by January 1, 2002 from the incumbent contractor.

The agency’s mainframe computer will be upgraded from the Unisys Clearpath 5800 series to the 6800 series processor. Extended technology services will include the replacement of older data storage technology with state of the art storage subsystems, encompassing magnetic and disk storage systems with significantly larger capacity, higher performance and reliability, and complete redundancy.

In fact, a new feature of the enhanced storage system will be a fully redundant or mirrored business recovery capability. The Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) named after the EMC Corporation data storage product that is the backbone of the facility, will allow the agency to have an exact replica of its data constantly updated at a remote location a duplicate copy ready to be placed on line in case of an emergency.

We have been extremely pleased with our partnership with Unisys on the Data PowerHouse project, said Charles Gerhards, Pennsylvania’s Chief Information Officer. This new work will not only assist the PACSES program but will further improve the Commonwealth’s business continuity preparedness to ensure that important public services are properly safeguarded from potential disruptions.

The products and services we’re delivering with this contract show the breadth of what Unisys has to offer as a technology partner, said Kenneth Wang, Vice President and General Manager, Unisys Global Outsourcing, North America. From Unisys-designed and built processors to the consolidating and transitioning of a huge, data-intensive agency into the contract scope, we’ve brought several areas of Unisys expertise into the mix for a truly unified solution.
