UNISYS SETS NEW TOP-END 1100, CELEBRATES UNIX SALES

By CBR Staff Writer

A new top-end mainframe in the 1100 line will be introduced this year, Unisys chief executive Michael Blumenthal told Dow Jones. The new machine won’t contribute much to 1988 business, but its success or failure is seen as crucial in the fight with IBM and DEC. Blumenthal also said that Unisys also had been doing extremely well with its workstations and mid-range computers that use the Unix operating system, noting that Unix system sales tripled in 1987 to $300m and should surge to between $450m and $600m in 1988, reaching $1,000m before long.
