Having failed to sell its defence systems business, Unisys Corp is now busy trying to turn swords into ploughshares, and has come out with a spread spectrum integrated circuit, the PA 100, which will be targeted at commercial wireless communications applications. The technology has up to now been used largely by military customers in communication systems requiring extreme security. Spread spectrum technology scatters the transmission across a range of spectrum at low power, a technique that makes it less susceptible to interference. Fabricated for Unisys by VLSI Technology Inc, the device demodulate an broad range of data rates, and is aimed primarily at wireless local networks for portable computers and phones.
