The Ardat Inc Archive Corp subsidiary based in Costa Mesa, California says that Unisys Corp has chosen the Archive Python SCSI digital audio tape drive for use in its Unix-based computer systems: the drive will be available as a 5.25 internal option across the U 6000 Series providing up to 8Gb of storage on 4mm cassettes and up to 2Gb of storage by using an extended length 90m DDS; the drive incorporates a 3.5 mechanism with no belts or spring levers, a cast aluminum deck for and microprocessor controlled direct drive reel motors; the drive offers back-up speeds of up to 183Kb per second, 11Mb per minute, and by incorporating from two to 20 80486 processors, the U 6000/75/85 systems can support more than 1,000 users; the Archive Python is available from Unisys for around $5,000.
