Unisys has expanded its line of ClearPath mainframe servers to include connectivity for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

One of the new offerings included in the update is the ClearPath ePortal Specialty Engine, which enables remote workers using Apple’s iPhone or iPod Touch devices to communicate with other ClearPath applications.

The devices can be integrated in a number of ways, including a plug-and-play capability that generates the iPhone or iPod Touch application interface; capabilities to customise web-based ClearPath applications with an iPhone or iPod Touch look-and-feel; and integration of native iPhone applications with ClearPath services, the company said.

The company has announced a total of five new ClearPath Libra and Dorado models, covering high-end down to entry level, the company said. Unisys claims that the new platforms offer up to 300% improvements in I/O and network capacity and 200% in price/performance.

The ClearPath Libra Models 780 and 790 are the high-end devices; said to be the most powerful systems ever to run the Unisys MCP operating environment. The mid-range Dorado Models 740 and 750 are designed to accommodate transaction processing requiring variable performance workloads.

The ClearPath Dorado Model 4050 is the entry level mainframe and uses Intel Xeon x64 processors. Unisys says that it is part of its plan to deliver next-gen architecture based on Intel technology for all Unisys servers.

All models except the entry level version use Unisys-designed CMOS processor technology. The new mainframe servers also use Metering – a pay-for-use system software licensing capability that enables users to maximise system capacity during peaks and minimise cost when use is low. Unisys says this should enable users to clients to pay for the exact amount of processing power they use.

Prices for the mainframes start at $420,000 for the Dorado Model 4050, $2m for the Dorado Models 740 and 750 and £3.3m for the high-end Libra Models 780 and 790.
