Uniplex Ltd, once a market leader in the small business office software market, has admitted defeat and is transforming itself into a document management company. Last year the firm split into two divisions (CI No 2,911), one to concentrate on OnGo Office, the other on its newer OnGo DMS Document Management System. Now, says Mike Hayes, director of marketing at the company’s base in San Mateo, California, the main focus will be on document management, with the Business Software Division simply maintaining its current business and doing only minimal further development. OnGo DMS version 3.0, just released, delivers on the promised integration of DMS with the InText intelligent agent document analysis tools from InText Ltd, a sister company to Uniplex, as the two are both owned by the CP Software Group of Folsom, California. Using a browser-based interface, the product is claimed to deliver personalised information through interest filters, automates the capture of business information feeds from various users, and provides intelligent notification to users. Hayes says InText will give Uniplex an edge over the more expensive Documentum Inc and lower-end PC-Docs Inc rival products. OnGo DMS costs around $100,000 for a 100 user system, running on Unix or Windows NT servers. Hayes says that Uniplex, which had a revenue of $18m last fiscal year, is seeing growth rates of 120% in the document management business, while the office business is flat or declining. He expects the document division to begin posting profits by the next quarter.
