Unify Corp has released version 5.0 of its application server, Unify Vision AppServer. The new product enables customers to build e-commerce applications by integrating Microsoft Active Server Pages (which combine HTML pages, scripts, and ActiveX server component to create web-based applications) with Unix application and transaction services. Currently, ASP-based web sites are limited to having transactions run only on Windows NT. Unix server components appear as standard, native ActiveX components to Microsoft ASP, and the applications can take advantage of the AppServer’s server replication, fail-over and recovery, load balancing and publish-and subscribe services. Unix-based server components can also be accessed through AppServer by Windows-based client-server applications, and the product provides centralized administration and management of all services. Vision 5.0 runs on Windows 95, 98, NT and most Unixes. Founded in 1980, Unify began in the RDBMS market, with the Accell fourth generation language following shortly afterwards. Vision was its second generation offering, built in response to competitors such as Dynasty and Forte. New management brought in at the end of 1994 from Informix Corp, led by CEO Reza Mikailli, shifted the focus to Vision. The company filed for its IPO in 1996, raising $21m.
