Under Armour has acquired Endomondo and MyFitnessPal, which has established the world’s largest digital health and fitness community.
These acquisitions appear to be part of the company’s plan to build its health and fitness data insights, in support of making products and athletes better.
Kevin Plank, Chairman and CEO of Under Armour, said: "Under Armour’s demonstrated global leadership in health and fitness innovation is greatly enhanced with the addition of Endomondo and MyFitnessPal, as we continue to redefine and elevate the Connected Fitness experience for millions of people around the world."
"Similar to MapMyFitness, Endomondo and MyFitnessPal have established track records of unmatched equity, expertise and passion in the fitness and nutrition space, and they are ideal partners to enable Under Armour to provide data-driven, proactive solutions to help athletes of all levels lead healthier and more active lifestyles."
MyFitnessPal has more than 80 million registered users and will expand Under Armour’s current offerings from UA Connected Fitness, the nutrition tools allow users to track calories, nutrition and exercise.
Edmondo is an open fitness tracking platform and social fitness network which utilises GPS to assist sports tracking. Currently hosting 20 million registered users, 80% of which are outside of the U.S, the acquisition helps to increase Under Armour’s international presence.
Mike Lee, Co-founder and CEO of MyFitnessPal, said: "At MyFitnessPal, user success is our true North. Under Armour will bring vast health and fitness expertise and resources to our 80 million users to help guide them as they work to achieve their health goals."
Under Armour already has a partnership in place with HTC for wearables and these acquisitions highlight the company’s big data future. Possible development of clothes with sensors throughout may be where Under Armour is looking to develop.
Mette Lykke, Endomondo Co-Founder and CEO, said: "Endomondo has built an engaged global community of fitness enthusiasts, providing a strong technical platform for our users, while adhering to our core belief that social interaction and support are key motivators when it comes to getting fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle."
