In a bid to ensure Y2K compliance, the Chinese government has decreed that the heads of all the country’s airlines will have to take a flight on January 1, 2000. According to a report in the Financial Times, the flights could be a nerve-wracking experience for the heads of some of the smaller airlines, who do not have the resources to solve Y2K problems. Meanwhile, it emerged in the UK last week that the civil servant in charge of the government’s efforts to ensure Y2K compliance will be retiring later this year – some months before the success or otherwise of his job becomes apparent.
