Mentor Computer Systems Ltd has bagged the exclusive UK distribution rights to Real 3D Inc’s Intel 740-based StarFighter graphics accelerator card. Stephen Tyler, Luton, UK-based Mentor’s managing director explained that the company was offering the board as a good, all-round product. He freely admitted that a Voodoo2’s better for the dedicated gamer but the StarFighter offered 2D, 3D, full screen 30 frame per second video with Direct3D and OpenGL support. The board is being offered in a 4 or 8Mb AGP configuration available now with a 12 to 24Mb PCI version expected late this month. The StarFighter PCI will be the only 740-based PCI board available. Tyler, sees a market for the PCI board in the UK, at least in the short term, claiming that there are something like five million Pentium PI and early PII users in the UK market. The cards will be available in OEM and retail packs, with or without DVD support, a 4Mb AGP board will cost 99 pounds.
