A Home Office spokesman said that the trial was part of an initiative to provide a secure IT infrastructure to facilitate web-delivered learning courses in seven London prisons. While the internet will be used as a delivery mechanism, all that any individual prisoner will have access to is the specific training course that the education department of the prison has explicitly assigned them.
However, the Prison Officers’ Association has condemned the proposal, highlighting that many prisoners have committed IT offences, which could put the public at risk if a breakdown were to occur.
