According to a Computer Weekly report, the technical failures affected dozens of UK hospitals. Some involved X-ray programs, while others affected online appointment systems. The most serious glitches have left staff unable to access main computer systems.

This is the latest setback in the government’s Connecting for Health IT program, which is roughly two years behind in its aim to link 30,000 GPs to 300 hospitals and create an electronic health record system by 2014.

However, in a statement, a spokesperson for Connecting for Health said that the glitches were not major incidents, and related to slow-running patient administration systems and local networks.
