Internet users in the UK like the information available and the ease of services such as software upgrades. However, they object to the time it takes to download files and images, resent the amount of junk to be found on the net, and still have difficulty finding exactly what they’re looking for at times. These are among the findings of a survey, carried out by UK pollster MORI on behalf of semiconductor manufacturer, Intel Corp. The survey interviewed 580 internet users, as well as 1,694 non-users, then arranged focus groups for more specific research.
Security issues were also touched upon in the survey, which found that 48% of users were worried about downloading a virus, while only 39% fret about credit card fraud. Among the non-users, the study highlighted some of the myths propagated about the net, such as the idea that surfing leads to ‘a huge telephone bill’. This would also explain why the main factor which could encourage more people to become users, according to those who aren’t, would be if it were cheaper to use the phone.
