The government has backed the programme and retailers will encourage consumers to deposit their unwanted phone at the ‘Fonebank’. The Fonebank will then either break the devices down for manufacturers or resell them as second hand goods in developing countries.
Phone manufactures will, by law, have to set up recycling schemes in two years time, so this scheme gives them a head start.
