The trial of the National Health Service (NHS) Connecting for Health’s GP2GP record transfer technology took place within Croydon Primary Care Trust. Practices in the region were equipped with version 1.1 of GP2GP, which allows for transfers between EMIS and InPS systems.
It represents the first time that patient records have been able to be transmitted electronically between different GPs’ systems, and, as such, has been hailed as a breakthrough in terms of modernizing the NHS.
These first transfers of GP electronic patient records between different practices using different computer systems is a watershed for patients, practices, the National Programme and the NHS, commented Dr Paul Cundy, from the Joint GP IT Committee. They provide an opportunity to simultaneously improve quality of care, enhance safety, increase efficiency and massively reduce the paper workload burden for practices.
A national rollout of GP2GP version 1.1 is expected to begin in the coming months.
