The UK government has unveiled plans to upgrade its e-business practice. In a white paper entitled Modernising Government, Dr Jack Cunningham identified the blue-print for future internet commercial development that will enable citizens to file tax returns, book driving tests, access public records, seek work and be matched for jobs and receive advice on health and benefits.

Businesses will also profit, with value added tax (VAT) registration and returns, Companies House filing, accounts receivable from government contracts, and regional support grant applications all possible.

The white paper builds on previous statements from the government, for example Prime Minister Tony BlairÆs pledge in 1997 that by 2002, 25% of the publicÆs dealings with government should be possible electronically. In his budget, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown allocated 1.7bn pounds ($2.7bn) to provide IT literacy to all.
