A BT transmission engineer from Northampton has become one of the first people in the world to be awarded a new ICT professional qualification, which is currently only awarded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Matthew Rumsey, 22, is one of just eight candidates to be recommended to receive ICTTech, a professional recognition unveiled in January 2009 following industry demands for a competence-based professional qualification for IT and communications (ICT) technicians.
The IET is licensed by the Engineering Council UK to award ICTTech, the first new registration category on the Engineering Council Register for nearly 35 years. The award provides individuals with professional recognition of a range of skills, from skills specific to certain products, to experience and interpersonal and professional skills.
Rumsey said: “I feel very privileged to be gaining professional registration. It gives me a lot of pride both personally and professionally to be recognised outside of the business for what I do especially through peer assessment. It’s like a seal of approval! Hopefully the ICTTech will be the first of my professional registrations – I would love to gain others in the future.”
“It’s a real achievement for Matthew that he is among the first eight people in the world to achieve this brand new professional qualification. ICTTech will help employers to identify ICT practitioners who hold the skills they need while also recognising technical expertise, greatly strengthening professionalism and ethical practice in a key sector of employment,” Michelle Richmond, IET director of membership and professional development said.
The IET is a professional organisation that promotes science, engineering and technology. The organisation was formed in 1871 and has 150,000 members in 127 countries with offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
