UK AWARDS SIX SATELLICENCES

By CBR Staff Writer

The UK Department of Trade and Industry has whittled the 27 applicants for licences to offer a UK up-link satellite service down to six licensees: British Aerospace Plc, British Satellite Broadcasting Ltd, Electronic Data Systems UK Ltd, Maxwell Satellite Communications Ltd, Satellite Information Services Ltd and Uplink Ltd have been given the go-ahead to operate single to multi-point broadcast only services. The disappointed number PanAm Satellite Inc and the Stock Exchange. Director of Telecommunications Bryan Carsberg said that he would keep the market under review but had no immediate plans to increase the number of licencees.
