Connecting for Health is the largest public sector IT project in the world outside the defense sector. It involves a number of contracts run by four principal contractors: Accenture, BT Group, CSC, and Fujitsu.
According to a draft transcript of a committee meeting in the House of Commons last month, the head of the National Audit Office, Sir John Bourn, said his delayed report into the project would not be published until early summer, but that it would make clear the failure to take the people of the National Health Service with them.
Bourn was responding to a question from Richard Bacon, a Member of Parliament for the opposition, who claimed that the project exhibits all the classic signs of a huge IT failure, and that every doctor he spoke to spits blood about it.
Last August, a study published in the British Medical Journal claimed that the timetable for the overhaul was unrealistic and that senior staff were unhappy with the way the project was being communicated.
