72% of SMEs across the UK are unaware about the data they use every month, while 37% do not know the maximum speed of their connection.

These staggering facts highlight how UK’s SMEs are in the dark when it comes to their own internet requirements

However, 65% of the companies said that they expect to use more digital technologies over the next five years, while 92% claimed that they expect to either stay the same or become more digital.

According to Virgin Media, the lack of understanding about their own internet goes against their own ambitions to become more digital in order to boost their online presence, social media channels, online ordering or online customer service.

Around 53% of decision makers belonging to small businesses in the UK claimed that they have experienced issues with slow broadband speeds, which has hampered their productivity.

Virgin Media said that it is introducing "Project Lightning", a large-scale investment towards UK’s broadband digital infrastructure.

The company is planning to roll out ultrafast connectivity with speeds of up to 152Mb, which will be faster than the broadband speed offered by other network giants BT, TalkTalk and Sky.

Virgin Media Business MD Peter Kellysaid: "Reliable, high-speed internet can make the difference between thriving and merely surviving for the UK’s five million small and medium sized businesses.

"As more and more of daily life shifts online, their need for fast connections will grow – but those frustrated with their current provider need not suffer in silence."
