The UK is finally winning something – we have the best average mobile data speeds in the world.
Not only is this the case, but we are twice as fast as our nearest rival Denmark, with our average connection now at 20.4Mbps, compared to 10Mbps for the Danes.
This is according to Akamai’s quarterly State of the Internet report which revealed that 95% of all mobile connections in the UK are over 4Mbps, which is twice as fast as stipulated by the last government as the basic speed needed for fixed broadband services.
Unfortunately, the UK isn’t top for peak connection speed during the quarter, with the UK delivering a peak speed of 90.9Mbps, with Japan (126Mbps) and Australia (149.3Mbps) coming out on top.
David Belson, report author, said: "While connectivity will continue to differ across many regions, we see the highest broadband speeds in countries/regions with high population densities and strong government backing or support, as well as those that foster competition among internet providers."
The growth of 4G services being rolled out across the UK from companies such as EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three has significantly increased the UK’s average speed, which jumped 28% from the previous quarter.
Despite the positives in the mobile connection space, the UK continues to lag behind with fixed connections. The average speed is 11.6Mbps, with 85% of connections over 4Mbps, however, South Korea recorded average speeds of 23.6Mbps with Ireland second with 17.4Mbps.
