Report: UK Facebook usage expected to plateau

Nearly a fifth of Britons say they are now using Facebook less than they were a year ago, and the trend is expected to continue.

Facebook is currently the king of social networking sites amongst UK online users but research shows the social site may plateau with 23% of the British population saying they now use the site less than they did 12 months earlier.

Research released by YouGov reveals that over 40% of the UK online population are getting bored with social media and Facebook is at the top of the list.

65% of online users in the UK have used Facebook in the last month allowing Facebook to boasts the highest percentage of active users on a social media website. Yet, avid online users are getting restless with 19% of UK Facebook users claiming they will use the site less in a year’s time. This follows the quarter of the UK population who say they use the site less than they did a year ago.

LinkedIn is predicted to move significantly forward in the UK social media rankings as over half of the UK population who are active users on the site say they use it now than 12 months ago. 30% of those surveyed say they will use it more in a year’s time.

YouGov’s research shows that YouTube comes in second as the most accessed social media website in the UK among online users with 50% of the population using the site within the last month. YouTube, though popular among online users, however, was found to be the least used social media platform amongst businesses, according to new research by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The two research findings seem to suggest that businesses have yet to pick up on the demand of video-generated content among UK online users.

Other social media sites with a high percentage of active UK users are Twitter with 23%, Windows Live with 14%, LinkedIn with 13%, Google+ with 12% and Spotify with 10%.
