Data centre provider DataCentred has become a member of the Helix Nebula Initiative (HNI), the European cloud consortium, joining other industry leaders such as SAP, T Systems and CGI.
HNI, set up by CERN and the European Space Agency among others, aims to establish an open and secure cloud computing infrastructure to support the IT requirements of European scientists and businesses.
DataCentred, headquartered in Manchester, provides colocation and open source cloud computing services to support public sector customers in Europe.
The firm, which has customers in academic research, education and broadcast industries, said it will work with HNI to develop the cloud computing infrastructure and open up the European cloud marketplace.
"Our membership of the Helix Nebula Initiative further demonstrates DataCentred’s long term commitment as a supplier of open source and cloud software services," said DataCentred’s CEO Dr Mike Kelly.
"This initiative will help to guarantee transparency in the marketplace and we are delighted to be working with Helix Nebular to help the PICSE initiative achieve its goals of further enabling a cloud productive environment in Europe in which its member organisations on the demand-side can benefit from an even broader portfolio of cloud services."
Currently around 30 commercial and publicly funded cloud service providers are part of HNI, including CERN, The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and the ESA.
