UK air passengers could soon have access to high-speed broadband when travelling in the UK under plans revealed by communications regulator Ofcom.
Ofcom said it plans to establish a regulatory framework that would permit the use of high-capacity Earth Stations on Mobile Platforms (ESOMPs).
If implemented, those flying would be able to surf the internet almost 10 times the speed currently available.
The service would be offered while travelling within the UK and would also likely become available on other transport services including trains and boats.
However, it is unclear whether routes outside British airspace will offer the service.
Charles Jenne, policy director at Ofcom, reportedly said: "Recent innovations in satellite technology mean it is now possible for aircraft, ships and trains to access the internet at speeds closer to what you’d expect from home broadband.
"Ofcom is proposing to allow the use of this technology in the UK, which could benefit business users and holiday-makers who want to stay connected while travelling."
Interested parties have been given until October to responds and Ofcom is expected to release a statement in December.
