UK-based start-up, Ubiquity Software Corporation, yesterday launched an ultra-thin client component to replace the existing client component of the company’s IP-based automated call management software product, Helmsman Communication Server. The original Helmsman product had its own client interface and worked as a separate application, explains president and CEO, Simon Gibson, but now Helmsman Desktop, integrates with the end-user’s existing applications, allowing the user to work within a familiar environment. Gibson told ComputerWire that Helmsman Desktop would be made available as freeware in May this year, and will be showcased at a number of upcoming events including NetWorks in Los Angeles in May.

The company completed a $1.2m first round of venture capital last year and is planning a second $3m round this year. Gibson said the company may attempt an IPO next year, but was skeptical about whether the company would get that far. All the small start-ups in the Voice over IP area have been swallowed up by the larger players in the networking sector, he says, and the same is likely to happen to Ubiquity, he said. Gibson wouldn’t be drawn on or prospective suitors of his company, which is 33% held by Newbridge Networks.
