With Lehman Brothers now appointed to review Tandem Computers Inc’s options for divesting itself of UB Networks Inc, UB is parading more of the new technologies it has up its sleeve. The Simple Network Management Protocol-manageable GeoRim/T is an eight-port Token Ring switch using adaptive cut-through switching, that comes with uplinks for Asynchronous Transfer Mode and FDDI. The base switch is shipping now with prices starting at $700 per port. An optional four-port expansion module ships next month, reducing the minimum per port cost to $600, while the Asynchronous Transfer Mode and FDDI uplinks will be out in the autumn – there is no pricing for these as yet. For the management of Token Ring networks, UB has also released a new module for its EMPower Supervisor family. The RMON-based module has two Token Ring ports – one for communication and one for a 10-group embedded RMON agent – and UB has added the option of a ring roving module, enabling the RMON agent to be used at any of up to 16 rings remotely. The EMPower Supervisor for Token Ring will be shipping in October, with prices going from $7,000. UB is also now shipping its promised OC-3 155Mbps Asynchronous Transfer Mode uplink for its new GeoRim/E Ethernet switch (CI No 2,913). It comes in either multimode fiber or Category 5 unshielded twisted pair variants, each costing $7,000.
