BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed that access to BlackBerry’s encrypted email service would be restricted in UAE adding that the rules applied to all smartphone services.
When email mesages move between a computer and a BlackbBerry device, the company encrypts them through it own BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). This has raised security concerns among nations.
The new guidelines say that access to BlackBerry’s encrypted email services will be allowed for only those organisations with 20 or more subscription of BES.
The company said that the regulator in UAE had said that the new rules were not targeted to BlackBerry and apply to all similar services.
"The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (of UAE) has confirmed to RIM that any potential policy regarding enterprise services in the UAE would be an industry-wide policy applying equally to all enterprise solution providers," the company said.
