Convex Computer Corp, Richardson, Texas, has sold its first two minisupercomputers into China. The first, a Convex C1 single processor system will be used for meteorological simulation and research by the government. And a dual processor system has been sold for oil and gas exploration, using SuperMineMap geophysical software from Aerospace Technologies Inc of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, which won both sales through its Geotech USA subsidiary, which concentrates specifically on wooing the Chinese. Two-year-old Aerospace develops turnkey systems, mostly for geophysical applications, and had $3m sales last year. It also supplies customised Sun stations as front-ends to the Convex systems.
