According to twopcharts, a new account is being registered on the site around every 9 seconds and the 500 million mark should be reached by 25 February 2012. The social networking site had reached 300 million accounts in May of last year so will have acquired 200 million accounts over the course of 9 months.
Twitter’s climb in registered accounts indicates a positive future for the site with numbers quickly growing, like Facebook. According to a report by icrossing Facebook has reached over 800 million users and is expected to reach 1 billion by August of this year.
Unlike Facebook, whose growth has slowed in the US and UK but picked up in developing countries, Twitter is still seeing steady growth in the US and UK.
Even though Twitter growth is booming it is worth noting that the CEO Dick Costolo said the social networking site only had 100 million active users when the site had reached 400 million but Costolo did point out that the number of active users was growing quickly.
"We had 30% of our monthly active users login in every day at the beginning of the year. Now it’s over 50%," he said.
Twitter is expected to be closing in on the 750 million mark by the end of 2012.
