At first it seemed really sweet that Rupert Murdoch and his wife decided to join Twitter together. But then "Wendi Deng’s" tweets began to get strange and the verified status was suddenly removed from the account with the description of "joining my husband @rupertmurdoch in our new digital adventure on Twitter".
"We can confirm that the account definitely is a fake," a spokesperson for News International told CBR.
It’s interesting, however, that the account was actually verified by Twitter. The verification of an account is Twitter’s way of ensuring that it is actually the person who is accessing and maintaining the Twitter account but the fake Wendi Deng account was able to fool Twitter for a full day.
The person pretending to be Wendi Deng on Twitter even told her "husband" to take down a questionable tweet which Murdoch actually took down. It started becoming obvious something might be off after a few flirtatious tweets claiming comedian Ricky Gervais is hot and tweets such as: "Sorry about last msg. u are all ver wonderful for bearing with sometimes bad tweeting from me + @rupertmurdoch !!"
The Wendi Deng Twitter imposter has openly admitted that the account is in fact a fraud:
"Hello Twitter. As News International has finally come to their senses, it’s time to confirm that yes, this is a fake account. I’m not Wendi," it said.
Well we have to admit no matter how fake, the tweets definitely kept Twitter followers entertained and at the very least interested.
