An article on the Cubadebate website criticised anti-Castro expats, calling them "necrophiliac counter-revolutionaries."
The website say a Twitter account holder with the name ‘Naroh’ started the rumour on Monday saying it was done from an Italian server and might have been taken over by a robot. It says the account was then deactivated soon after.
The Cubadebate website also claimed Twitter censored topics in the past that supported the Cuban government. However, Twitter spokesperson, Jodi Olson, told the Associated Press: "As you know we don’t mediate content."
It is not uncommon for false celebrity death rumours to spread on the internet and social media sites can speed the spread of such rumours very quickly.
The holder of the Twitter account has his name listed as ‘Naroh-David Fdez and his account says he is 20 years old and living in Spain.
Naroh tweeted to Associated Press that he didn’t start anything. He said his posts were just jokes and that the topic was already trending when he started tweeting about it.
The Fidel Castro trending topic briefly became the fourth most popular in the world. On Wednesday, Cubadebate said the rumour was spread by: "People inventing things in the virtual world that even the CIA could not accomplish in real life."
Castro, now 85, turned power over to his brother, Raul, back in 2006 and is now retired.
