Twitter has appointed NBC News digital executive Vivian Schiller as the chief of its News Partnerships, following months of speculation since the micro-blogging platform placed a job listing for the position previous spring.

The latest appointment by Twitter, which filed for IPO in September 2013, comes in the wake of criticism for having only white men in its existing list of board of directors.

Schiller Tweeted: "Excited to join @Twitter as Head of News in January.

"Leaving @NBCNews at year’s end," she added.

"Grateful to my beloved colleagues for 2+ great years."

Upon joining Twitter in January 2014, Schiller will act as a link between the social network and news organisations.

Schiller has a broad background as an executive responsible for digital news, while her earlier experiences include roles as senior vice president and chief digital officer at NBC, CEO of National Public Radio, as well as being responsible for day-to-day operations at the New York Times.

Twitter is also seeking a valuation of about $11.2bn in its IPO next month through the sale of 70m shares – 13% of its equity.
