How a grant got one TV firm’s Internet moving superfast

Newcastle council is rolling out superfast broadband across 97% of the city.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

A production company in Newcastle says it has saved time, money and effort after receiving £3,000 worth of funding to connect to Wildcard Networks’ superfast broadband.

Re:production, which creates TV commercials and corporate videos for Dreams, Barker and Stonehouse, looked to Go Digital Newcastle, a campaign run by Newcastle City Council, after experiencing slow uploading speeds.

Phil Greenwood, Re:production managing partner, told CBR: "We’ll easily recoup our investment as we’ll be able to do so much more. If our Internet goes 20 times faster, our productivity goes up 20 times leaving our editors with more free time, which will mean they can do more and our service to customers will improve.

"It also ends the frustration of waiting around for ages for things to go. We used to try to send files at night because they took so long.

"We work with files that can be two or three gigabytes in size – and we need to be able to download video rushes of up to 100 gigabytes, so superfast broadband is a gift."

The Go Digital Newcastle team provides local businesses with vouchers worth up to £3,000 towards the cost of getting connected to superfast broadband, free business support and up to £2,000 towards the cost of equipment.

Lisa Clark, project director, said: "Go Digital Newcastle is getting lots of interest in the scheme and because funding is limited, we’re encouraging companies to act quickly so they don’t miss out."
