Turkey is entering the computer age. Computerwoche reports that the Turkish association for manufacturers of communications products and information technology, ESID, is expecting a computer boom in the years to come. At the present moment, there are only 200,000 computers in use in the country and only one national personal computer manufacturer. According to ESID though, local suppliers of information technology, and in particular communications, are gaining a foothold. The 55 members of the association saw the joint value of their businesses grow to $746m from $536m in 1991, with a hefty $669m generated from the telecommunications sector. And the import of information technology and communications products is forecast to grow with ever more momentum. The Turks are also aiming for import growth in the area of electronic components, a market that as little as five years ago, did not exist.
