T-Systems has won contracts in South Africa to provide information and communication technology (ICT) for the energy provider Eskom and the transport company Transnet from January 1, 2010.

The two semi state-owned companies have sold their shares in their current ICT service provider arivia.kom to T-Systems as well as they each signed a five-year agreement with the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary.

The company said that the complete outsourcing agreements are part of the strategy of Eskom and Transnet to concentrate on their core business and purchase infrastructure services from the external market.

T-Systems said that the two companies aim to benefit by reducing costs, and use savings for new initiatives such as the expansion of South African infrastructure. Through its agreement with Eskom, the company also increases its base in the systems integration segment and gains additional expertise in the manufacturing industry and the public sector.

Reinhard Clemens, member of the board of management of Deutsche Telekom and CEO of T-Systems, said: After BP and Philips, this is the third major sales win in quick succession. The new mega contract bears out that we are pursuing exactly the right growth strategy with our international alignment. Major contracts like this lay the foundations for our business in the coming years and give us the clout we need in the markets that are important for us to offer global corporations attractive services locally.
