Tseng Labs Inc, Newton, Pennsylvania has a second generation of its IBM-compatible VGA controller chip: the ET4000 is designed to optimise price-performance with 100% register-level compatibility in all video standards using VGA, EGA, CGA, MDA and Hercules modes and adds intelligence and flexibility in managing memory resources to the first generation part; it needs only IBM dynamic memory devices to provide more than twice the standard VGA performance with 40% less circuit board space in a VGA display controller implementation, the company claims, and with enough memory it can support resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels and 256 simultaneous colours; samples are available now with volume set for December; the firm did not give prices.
